The Lupus Lyric

The harder I push, the sicker I get
The sicker I get, the less I resemble myself
The less I resemble myself, the harder I push to try and regain
some semblance of who I used to be.

I came up with this about a year and a half ago as I was writing my book. How true it is!

Would anyone else like to share some poetic thoughts, words of wisdom, or phrases that they live by? Feel free - that's what the "comments" are for!

I LOVE that poem! Did you write it?
Sara Gorman said…
Yup, I did. I came up with it while I was writing the section of my book that talks about meshing a driven, determined, perfectionist mentality with the limitations of a chronic illness. No fun to sort out - but worth it in the end.

Thanks for asking!

Sara,
I thought I'd share my list of energy boosters. They may not be new or insightful (or involve caffeine), but they work well to replenish my spirit:

Celebrating my talents and abilities
Creating
Giving back without giving in
Laughing
Lowering expectations of myself
Resting
Appreciating those that care about me
Eating good food
Finding joy in the seemingly mundane
Drinking water
Spending time with people who invigorate me
Giving thanks
Taking someone up on their offer to help me
Relaxing
Remembering to take care of my own needs
Stopping
Listening to my surroundings
Paying attention to the beauty all around me
Living, not worrying

Love you, Sis

I've tried and tried to get off caffeine and as of yet I CAN'T. I feel so much better in my brain with some caffeine. I feel so sluggish and in a fog without it. Does anyone else feel that way? I don't drink a ton....just a coke or two but it seems to make a really big difference in how I feel.

Sara,
Your poem is awesome and says EXACTLY how I feel. You nailed it girl! Good job!

I remember when my mom went "caffeine free" years ago - definitely not a time I remember fondly. :)

I personally don't react well to caffeine (makes me jittery, keeps me away, etc) - so I try to stay away from it. I never do caff. coffee, but a soda with caffeine doesn't seem to have the same effect on me.

But if a little shot of caffeine in the morning or around mid-day helps get you through, I think you'll be okay. I'm sure there are plenty of people who would join you!
